Water Meter Verification.

Accurate water take information was introduced under the Resource Management Act in November 2010.

Regulations require all water takes of 5 l/s or more to be metered, as well as supply regular electronic records to Bay of Plenty Regional Council (BOPRC)

Steve Miller Rural Services can verify the water meter and associated pipework to conform with the regulations.

The verification of the metering system simply means, to have an accuracy of +/- 5% of the reference meter or SMRS reference meter.

To ensure accuracy is achieved the water metering device is required to be installed correctly.

Typical installations require the water meter, downstream of the site meter a tee and a valve. The tee is required for SMRS to connect to the pipe system in order to complete the verifcation. The verifcation process involves running the system through the on site meter and then through the SMRS reference meter. A computor is linked to the pulse output cables on each water meter and the results are graphed onto the computor. Three tests are conducted for 15 minute intervals. A pass test result is when +/- 5% or lower is achieved by the end of the test.

  • Suited to water conditions/quality.
  • Water meter security or tamper proof.
  • Installed as close as practical to the water source prior to any outlets/pipe branches.
  • Sufficient straight lengths of pipe before and after the water meter - typically 10 x pipe diameters before and 5 pipe diameters after.
  • Sized accordingly to the flows required as well as adequate pipe sizes.

Verification repetitions are required every 5 years thereafter or as per the individual consent conditions.
